XIX Annual Strategic Planning Leaders Forum of The Regions and Cities of Russia. April 4 – 6, 2021. St. Petersburg
por Juan Carlos Belloso
Round Table: «Post-Pandemic Cities: More Attractive, Sustainable and Protected» (Organized by Union of Russian Cities together with Future Places) – April 4-6, 2021
Cities faced new challenges (COVID-19, closure of borders and territories, shock and subsequent disruptions in economic and social development, deep recession for a number of industries that shape the urban economy, etc.). In fact, we have entered a new era. The world is becoming more urbanized and, as the experience of combating COVID-19 has shown, more vulnerable. New strategies are required, adequate to the current period, in order to make cities more attractive for both local residents and enterprises, businesses, investors, visitors (tourists, qualified personnel, etc.).
The pandemic has accelerated global trends, including the formation of more resilient cities (their life support systems), changes in the needs of urban communities and visitors, changes in the values and priorities of citizens, including an increased pace of digitalization, increased uncertainty with the state of cities, the need for new marketing solutions and the demand for more sustainable development model. With even greater strength, cities are forced to compete for development resources (finance / investment, technology, personnel, knowledge, etc.). Cities have been at the forefront of managing crises and responding to citizens’ needs, implementing rapid economic and social initiatives such as strengthening municipal health systems, reimagining essential services, reimagining and reorganizing public spaces to deliver public health, social distancing, supporting local businesses, and entrepreneurs, as well as providing assistance to the most vulnerable segments of the population and those affected. Regions, municipalities in Russia and abroad react differently to the challenges of the current stage and implement their unique solutions, the experience of which can be useful for embedding cities in the most effective and competitive models of the «era of transformation».
Join the panel organized by The Union of Russian Cities together with Future Places, with the participation of Juan Carlos Belloso as speaker and moderator.
